Stealth is the name of the came when focusing on Browns. Concentrate on the edges where the river water meets the lake water. The darker river water absorbs the suns rays and warms faster than the cobalt blue lake water. Your most productive location along the shoreline will be downwind of the nearest river outlet. With the main lake water temp hovering in the low 40’s Browns seek warmwater discharges by power plants and warmer near shore river water. This warm water preference is the reason why Browns are easiest to target in the spring. Of the 5 major species Browns prefer the warmest water temps of the bunch with 60-63 being optimal. I’m not saying you can’t catch them all year because you sure can it’s just easiest in the spring. With spring in the air I’ll start with the mighty Brown Trout, since they are the first fish available to most great lakes trollers.īrowns are very seasonal dependent, prime time for Browns is from ice out through the end of April. I will go into detail about how to target each of the big 5. This is the first in a 5 part series covering each one of the 5 major great lakes species.
